Old War Dogs: RIP Fred

September 23rd, 2009 by Exspider

Fred Marshall Jr. passed away recently. He was a true Patriot, a comrade in arms, and served his country well. May God rest your soul my brother…..

CSM Fred Marshall Jr.

Fred Dwarren Marshall, Jr. April 8, 1937 - September 19, 2009 COLUMBUS, GA— Fred was born on April 8, 1937, to Fred Dwarren Marshall and Irene Doyle Marshall, amid the Great Depression, in Bradford Tennessee, where his family and most others lived in what would today be regarded as abject poverty. They moved to Humboldt, Tennessee, in 1941. He graduated from Humboldt High School in 1955 and entered the United States Army, where he completed a 20-year career. He served progressively in every existing enlisted grade, from private to Command Sergeant Major. Fred served two four-year tours in Germany, with successive duty stations in Augsburg, Bad Kreuznach, and Bremerhaven. He married Augsburg native Gertraude Marie Meixner during the first tour, on September 4, 1959, and they were divorced during the second tour in April, 1966. His older son, Fred Dwarren Marshall III, was born August 23rd, 1960, at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, between his tours in Germany. He later served nearly three tours in the Republic of Vietnam, participating in eight of the fifteen major campaigns of the war, in addition to three tours at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, three tours at Fort Benning, Georgia, one brief tour at Fort Dix, New Jersey, and one particularly prestigious assignment in the Pentagon, where he was posted as the Principal Assistant to the Sergeant Major of the Army (George W. Dunaway). SMA Dunaway was the Army’s second Sergeant Major of the Army; he personally selected Fred and pulled him out of Vietnam early, specifically for this assignment. He trusted Fred completely, and wanted him to manage his administrative staff. In 1966, Fred was borrowed by Department of Defense for a high-level classified mission which lasted for seven months, in various undisclosed locations. During his final assignment at Fort Benning as a brigade command sergeant major, Fred met Jaime Lorilyn Mott and married her on Christmas Day, 1975. His second son, James Matthew, was born on May 31, 1977, after Fred had retired from the Army and embarked upon a 20-year real estate career. He founded a real estate brokerage firm, Parade of Homes, in 1980, and closed it when he finally completely retired in 1997. He and Jaime were divorced in October, 1987, shortly after Fred’s right leg was amputated above the knee, as a result of the rare form of bone cancer, osteogenic sarcoma. The Court granted custody of James Matthew to Fred. Fred is survived by his mother, Irene Oliver, of Humboldt, Tennessee, and his two sons. Fred III lives in Columbus, Georgia, with his wife, Loretta, and their daughter, Sara, and is a lead programmer analyst with TSYS. James Matthew also resides in Columbus, and is divorced. He is an entrepreneur. A memorial service will be held Friday, September 25th, 2009 at 4:00 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, 7556 Old Moon Road in Columbus, Georgia. He requested before his death that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the patriotic organization American Underground Network, Box 19165, Charlotte, NC 28219, or online at www.aunetwork.tv.

Old War Dogs Update

January 19th, 2009 by Exspider

IOR is listed as an Old War Dogs satellite site so I’ll take the liberty of posting a bit of it here. Hopefully I can give you some insight into how it all came about and evolved over the years.
I’d also like to thank Gray Dog for keeping the lights on after Bill’s passing. I appreciate it and will be more than happy to contribute what I can to keep this thing alive. The old engineer just passed the keys. All we have to do is use them.

I should have added this link to Michelle Malkin’s article.

Also to Uncle Jimbo’s post at BlackFive.

Also, Bill’s sister has requested donations be made to Soldier’s Angels in lieu of flowers.

Finally, I am unable to approve any comments left for Bill at other posts.  Some of you already have posted elsewhere.  If you wish to leave a comment for Bill please do so at this article, for which I am able to approve comments for.  Thank You.

**********************************************

It is with a saddened heart that I just heard from another Old War Dog, Zero Ponsdorf, that Michelle Malkin reported the death of Old War Dog founder and webmaster Bill Faith.  I missed a couple of opportunities this year as I traveled through Southern Illinois, to stop and meet Bill in person.  This is a mistake I will regret for the rest of my life.

Through an electronic introduction from another Old War Dog, Jim Bartimus, I was introduced to Bill in July of 2005.  It was then that Bill extended the invitation to join the Old War Dogs Blog, and it was the first type of anything in my adult lifetime I had ever joined.

Bill could be cantankerous at times, often causing a bit of dissent among the ranks.  But, I know that Bill’s life centered around two things: Old War Dogs and his Grandson.  His Blogging and love of America, I can speak to.  His abundant love for his daughter and grandson I will leave for others.

Many years later, Bill and I discovered that I had preceded him into the Air Force by a mere week back in the summer of 1970, and that most of our time at Lackland AFB and afterward at Sheppard AFB, had overlapped.  That’s where the similarity ended.  Bill went on to serve in Vietnam, while I defended America from the frozen moonscapes of Alaska.  I think it was our same age, military branch, and the fact that we were both Illinoisans, that caused Bill to always favor my writing and give it a little boost in the Blog position each day.  In fact I was often embarrassed by the favoritism.

Others, such as Russ Vaughn, JD Pendry, George “Rurik” Mellinger, William “1st Cav” Page and Zero Ponsdorf knew Bill longer and perhaps better than I, although most of us have been strangers to Old War Dogs for a couple of years now.

A couple of years ago, Bill had entrusted the “keys” to the Old War Dogs Site with me and Russ Vaughn.  I haven’t been in contact with Russ for some time, and I’m not sure how to proceed.  Old War Dogs and Small Town Veteran were 100% Bill Faith.  There is a part of me that says we should keep OWD going as a tribute to Bill, yet another that says it would only be a cheap imitation.  As mentioned before, Russ and JD and perhaps a few others will have more to say on the topic.

In closing, I simply want to say that Bill was a patriot, a loving father and grandfather, and a clear voice for veteran’s causes throughout the blogosphere.  And for me personally, he was a friend and fellow Old War Dog.  I will miss him.

Bill Faith; My Buddy
Contributed by The Gray Dog

The following was forwarded to me from Russ Vaughn.  It is difficult to separate, Bill and Russ, as to  who did what first to give birth to Old War Dogs.

By Russ Vaughn

Bill Faith was my buddy, a term that has particular meaning for those who have worn a uniform in service to this country. And though I never met him, nor even heard his voice a single time, that’s how I will remember Bill, as my buddy, someone who served alongside me through victory and defeat, through thick and thin, but who always could be counted on to stand up and be counted when it counted most.

I must first apologize to Bill’s family and all of you out there for being tardy in posting my thoughts on Bill’s passing. Two months ago my wife and I were abruptly thrust into the role of primary caregivers for her almost ninety-year-old parents, a responsibility which has kept both of us away from our computers and me from my blogging efforts. It was only through an email from The Gray Dog, Mike Connelly, that I learned belatedly of Bill’s death.

I don’t even remember precisely when Bill and I became acquainted, just that it was sometime after John Kerry became the Democrat frontrunner in 2004 and this old Vietnam vet, like millions of my brothers, swore to do everything in my power to prevent that traitor from ever becoming commander in chief. Scott Swett, at Wintersoldier blog, first began posting my anti-Kerry rants, which were then picked up by the Freepers and spread to other like-minded sites. Shortly thereafter I received an email from Bill, telling me he would like to post my pieces at his Small Town Veteran blog. As soon as I visited the site, I knew I had found an ally, one who quickly became a long-distance friend and a valued editor of my sometimes rough expositions.

When Kerry was defeated in November 2004, Bill and I, like all our Vietnam veteran brothers who had fought to keep Kerry out of the presidency, were exhilarated and felt that at last we had been exonerated. In sharing that victory, we became buddies, and the bond became even stronger in the summer of 2006 when Bill became webmaster of our new blog, Old War Dogs, which may have been my brainstorm but was Bill’s baby from the outset. He built the pen and the doghouse from scratch and fed and watered that pup every day. And like most proud papas, he could get quickly cantankerous if he felt like someone was mistreating his dog, including me.

Bill kept OWD up and running all through this last election fiasco even though, like me, he was never more than lukewarm to the idea of John McCain as our candidate. But, good soldier that he was, Bill fought the good fight right up until the bitter end. And as bitter as it was for the rest of us, his email telling me that he was going to back away from daily blogging at OWD, made me aware that my buddy was battle weary and in need of some respite. I regret not then realizing just how badly needed it was.

Michelle Malkin’s farewell post to Bill includes my poem, The Sheepdogs, and I thank her for that because there was never a more dedicated Sheepdog than Bill Faith. He loved his flock, both the immediate, his family, especially his new grandbaby, and that much larger flock, his countrymen.

Bill, I’m gonna miss you, Buddy.

Bill and I became acquainted during the “Kerry Wars” preceding the 2004 presidential election. He had teamed up with Russ Vaughn to create Old War Dogs as well as maintaining his personal blogs at Small Town Veteran and Bill’s Bites. He worked tirelessly to support veterans groups and charities and was a true Veteran-American.

True hope for us as a nation lies within that sort of mindset.

She’s Running Against…

September 2nd, 2008 by Exspider

Russ Vaughn
A poem contributed by Russ Vaughn.

divider

She’s running against old Scranton Joe,
Whose blue-collar pedigree we all know,
Because mainstream media says it’s true,
Though facts don’t quite support that view.
Joe says himself he’s middle class,
But the MSM considers that crass;
Middle Class? That’s so demeaning,
Got to be blue collar, leftist leaning.

She’s running against a rock-hard bias,
Of Mainstream Media, oh so pious,
Who ignored John Edwards secret screwing,
But pounce upon a teen’s wrongdoing.
A double standard? Oh you bet,
But folks you ain’t seen nothing yet;
These vultures we know will not pause,
To destroy this girl for their liberal cause.

She’s running against a dubious deal,
Dealt by our media so surreal,
The one’s should keep us all informed,
So twisted now, by hate malformed.
No longer do we get the news,
But extreme opinions, liberal views.
With hateful words, a teen they’ve trussed,
While Edward’s sins are undiscussed.

She’s running against the New York Times,
Godmother of journalistic crimes.
She’s conservative, so she doesn’t fit?
Be ready for their murderous hit.
If they don’t get her, she’s still toast,
For a backstab hit by the Washington Post;
And if they can’t kill her with their slimes,
There’s the West Coast hitters, the L.A. Times.

She’s running against some heavy odds, some think she’s not up to it,
I think she’s favored by the gods, and the libs are about to screw it.

An Obamanation

March 16th, 2008 by Exspider

Russ Vaughn

An Obamanation

It’s unfair the Obamatons howl,
To charge guilt by association;
Our boy has committed no foul;
He’s just one of the congregation.
While sitting there twenty long years,
As the reverend spewed out his odium,
Naught wafted into those large ears,
But spittle and froth from the podium?

No such tirades did I ever see,
Says Obama now that it’s news;
No rants about AIDS heard by me,
Nor venomous bile aimed at Jews.
You cherry pick dribbles and bites
From sermons of many long years;
You say my preacher hates whites?
My goodness that’s news to my ears!

But a man picks a church like a wife,
As a comfortable mate for his soul,
With commonly shared views of life;
They are parts of the man as a whole.
So Obama is welcome to try
To convince us that his soul is pure,
But it’s just a political lie;
He buys into his preacher’s manure.

Why else then sit in that church pew,
With children and wife at your side?
If you truly do not share the world view,
Of your hate-spewing spiritual guide?
Yet now you denounce Jeremiah,
In your quest for power and station;
He’s a conveniently banished pariah;
Barack, you’re an Obamanation.

Entertaining Considerations

February 5th, 2008 by Exspider

Thanks for the submission Russ. Senator McCain is the proverbial fox in the hen house. He just dressed like a chicken to get the job done IMO, but that’s typical of a lot of politicians these days. Thanks to the nanny state way of thinking I’m sitting here having to puff on a crappy tasting cigarette that is fire safe, and goes out if I don’t feel like constantly puffing on it. We have a problem Houston, and John McCain probably won’t help the situation.

Entertaining Considerations
by Russ Vaughn

I was afraid this was going to happen when McCain started coming on stronger in the primaries. To an even greater extent than John Kerry, John McCain possesses the ability to politically divide American veterans more than any other presidential candidate. With Kerry, a key determinant of which way veterans’ loyalties fell was party affiliation. I’m sure there were many liberal Democrat veterans, particularly Vietnam veterans, who held their noses and supported a man they viscerally disliked because he was their party’s candidate and represented their overall liberal positions. It was easy for those of us who were politically conservative Vietnam vets to take a hard, unrelenting stand against the man we knew had smeared us because he was the candidate of the party whose positions we opposed.

Today, this division among veterans in general and Vietnam veterans in particular has been turned by McCain’s candidacy into a family fight among Republican veterans that threatens our already diminished prospects for victory in November. While virtually all of us admire and respect McCain’s military service and POW sacrifice, there are millions of us who feel that is simply not enough for him to be able to command our political loyalties four decades later. Setting aside the fact that McCain sided with John Kerry in 2004 and denounced those of us who dared to question Kerry’s very questionable war record, there are many reasons why we do not see John McCain as being someone we can trust to represent the mainstream views of the Republican party. I will spare you a Sean Hannity, rapid-fire recitation of the litany of McCain’s transgressions against his own party because I think there is a single issue far more compelling.

Not So Fast There, McCain!

January 22nd, 2008 by Exspider

This was submitted by my good friend Russ Vaughn over at Old War Dogs here: Not So Fast There, McCain. Spot on analysis IMO of what the MSM media won’t tell you about the man.

The Main Stream Media has done more harm to the political process in this country than any of the so-called political parties involved. Dog and pony shows are for people’s entertainment and shouldn’t be setting the standards for us as a nation.

Not So Fast There, McCain!
Contributed by Russ Vaughn

Up front, as a Vietnam veteran, I will readily concede that I respect John McCain for his service to his country, first as a naval aviator and POW in Vietnam, then for his long years in our national Congress. I even will admit to the fact that I somewhat admire McCain’s desire to effect political reconciliation with the Democrat party. That being said, I must also make it very clear that I do not support certain decisions McCain has chosen on his pathways to political advancement.

Tonight, as it appears that the Senator may well be the Republican “Comeback Kid,” I am reminded of an old Army joke about a platoon sergeant faced with the prospect of breaking the terrible news to one of his young privates, Jones, that the soldier’s mother has just passed away. The sergeant calls his platoon into formation and barks out the order, “All of you with living mothers take one step forward.” Then after a momentary pause, he mutters, “Not so fast there, Jones.”

That’s my take as a veteran and a conservative Republican on this new development: “Not so fast there, McCain.”

My first and biggest beef with John McCain is that when a very brave group of Vietnam veterans who had served with John Kerry stood up to say that Kerry’s self-serving portrayal of his war record was patently false, that his blanket charges of war crimes against them were absurd, and that his testimony in Congress was used by the North Vietnamese to further torture McCain’s fellow POW’s, the Arizona Senator airily dismissed his former military buddies and sided with his new political pal in the Senate. Playing conciliator in the national media, McCain despicably denounced the Swift boat veterans as pawns of George Bush and the Republican right. Just like all the leftists in the MSM, John McCain never gave these true American heroes even the least opportunity to defend their claims. As a veteran who had suffered more than most to defend our constitutional right of free speech, McCain inexplicably used his powerful office and national presence to ally himself with the repressive forces of mainstream media to suppress that right to men who had fought themselves to preserve it. It was one of the bitterest betrayals the Swift boat vets and the millions of us Vietnam veterans supporting them would have to endure. We expected treachery from the MSM, but not from John McCain.

What I can never reconcile in my mind, my heart or my soul, is how this naval aviator, POW and true war hero, could so easily turn his back on his fellow sailors, combat veterans all. In the name of political expediency, and a sorely misguided attempt to lay to rest all the troubled ghosts of Vietnam that his treasonous Senate colleague was primarily responsible for creating, John McCain turned his back on the true heroes and sided with a phony vet with phony medals and a suspect discharge.

Never mind that I disagree with McCain on immigration, taxes and his unconstitutional McCain-Feingold bill, that’s all merely politics; that has nothing to do with honor and loyalty to those who served bravely alongside you in combat. Nope, that’s not the issue. But I’m putting the Senator on notice right now; if you should somehow get the Republican nomination, you are gambling with the votes of millions of veterans like me unless you repudiate your reprehensible siding with the traitorous, treasonous John Kerry. I have never stayed home on Election Day in protest of a distasteful candidate, but this could be the first time for me and many Vietnam vets, again turning our backs on a fellow vet who turned his first.

The Senator should read the excellent recounting of how a determined few veterans, whom he disgracefully defamed, defeated his old buddy, John Kerry, in 2004. In ‘To Set the Record Straight,” authors Scott Swett and Tim Ziegler, lay it out, page by page, what the concerted efforts of a few honorable patriots with an unrelenting resolve can accomplish in the arena of national politics.

Like the old platoon sergeant, I would caution, “Not so fast there, McCain!

The Ethanol Fallacy: Op-Ed. From Popular Mechanics

America needs smart alternative to oil, but the just-passed energy bill puts too much emphasis on the wrong alternative, PM’s editor-in-chief says.

The idea is so appealing: We can reduce our dependence on oil—stop sending U.S. dollars to corrupt petro-dictators, stop spewing megatons of carbon into the atmos¬phere—by replacing it with clean, home-grown, all-American corn. It sounds too good to be true.

Sadly, it is.

Re-sinking John Kerry

Re-sinking John Kerry: Contributed by Russ Vaughn

divider

I’ve been too busy to write anything lately but when I saw this, Kerry says he’ll be ready next time, the old animus came bubbling up once again.

From Davy Jones’ locker a zombie emerges,
A Purple Heart phony with political urges;
Assuring the press he regrets his Swift boating,
John Kerry believes his boat is still floating.
He readily admits that he got torpedoed,
But he’s up on his sail board, defiant and Speedo’d.
The arrogant fool believes his wife’s riches
Is enough to trump all of us Swift sons-of-bitches.

But John is a zombie, a dead sailor walking,
His brain is long dead but his mouth is still talking.
He needs a torpedo through his political heart,
Reducing his speeches to a bubbling fart.
Though Kerry pretends that his life isn’t haunted
By Vietnam vets he slandered and taunted,
The younger among them will bury this knave,
And stand waiting in line to piss on his grave.

If I were John Kerry I’d consider cremation,
Lest I lie in the soggiest grave in the nation.

Russ Vaughn: Of Eagles And Chickens

September 12th, 2007 by Exspider

We Americans are a mix of birds,
Some soarers, others grounders;
And from their strong, enduring words,
More Eagles were among our Founders.
But different birds this domain share,
Some soaring, some just clucking;
While Eagles soar, patrol the air;
Penned Chickens wait for plucking.

Eagles have sharp, raptor eyes,
Not so in birds fear stricken;
An Eagle fights to own his skies,
Not so the hen-housed Chicken.
Feckless fowl, they placidly peck,
Flocking to their foolish fate,
Flashing blade on feathered neck,
Must they always learn too late?

That’s why we use the very word
To taunt those who won’t fight;
A Chicken is some fear-filled bird,
Whose fear provokes his plight.
Frightened fowl will surrender all,
Hoping for a peaceful ending,
Unmindful that their heads may fall,
Blind to bright blades descending.

But Eagles being bolder birds,
Seek our enemies in their lair,
Screaming Eagles, forgoing words,
Strike with deadly talons there.
Proud raptors who together fight
Know something Chickens never will,
Love of country and birthright,
A rara avis grounder skill.

The anti-war capons of Answer
And hysterical hens of Code Pink,
Let bird flu turn into fowl cancer,
And their pen is beginning to stink.
As they flock to the Mall in September
To disgrace and dishonor their nation
It would behoove them to remember
Watchful Eagles are on station.

Vietnam Memorial Wall (DC) Defaced Sept 7-8, 2007

September 11th, 2007 by Exspider

This is the mind set of the anti-war crowd in a nutshell. They are no different than those that turn grave stones over in our cemeteries. They are child like in nature, and have no respect for anyone or anything. They are a bunch of chicken shit losers that don’t have the balls to fight a real war.

The perpetrators used a liquid with an oil base to inflict some very significant damage to the entire length of the wall. I know I’m not alone in my outrage at the audacity of these clowns that can only see America and its hero’s as something to be trashed.

The YouTube video from Free Republic is HERE

Eagles Up has the pictures posted HERE also.

image

I thought they watched our monuments in DC a lot closer than this folks. Don’t they use cameras to monitor all of that important stuff?
Anyhow, the Code pink and ANSWER crowd make a big splash every time they show up in DC. It’s nothing but a clown show of course, but the main stream press eats it up, and won’t even touch something like this. Nooooo….. It’s all about how well the Hsu thing was handled by the Clinton Camp. I’m really starting to hate clowns. They sure as hell shouldn’t be running the rodeo.

Eagles Up!

August 29th, 2007 by Exspider

Colonel’s Corner - August 29, 2007

The days surrounding September 15 appear to be taking on a vital time for America…many officials testifying to Congress for and against various issues related to national security, the Commander-in-Chief is reported as preparing some policy announcement, anti-America elements preparing to spread false, misleading, and distorted messages…and further, American troops will be watching, listening, praying about all this, and yes, probably dying during this week, in hopes America will not let them down…not abandon moms, dads, sons, and daughters in harms way……….

I have a message for our gallant warriors and their families…Eagles will have your back and the back of your Commander, General Petraeus, in Washington, DC on September 15…..we will not abandon or betray over 200 years of warrior sacrifices to a minority willing to surrender it all.
