The “state” Illinois finds itself in.

July 3rd, 2010 by Exspider

Dysfunctional is the word that comes to mind for me when looking at our current state of affairs. A lot of the talking heads say we have to raise taxes to fix the problem, but that will only work up to a certain point. Nothing in, nothing out ………..

Kicking a can down the road may be fun but it’s a waste of time for the most part.

Illinois Stops Paying Its Bills, but Can’t Stop Digging Hole

CHICAGO — Even by the standards of this deficit-ridden state, Illinois’s comptroller, Daniel W. Hynes, faces an ugly balance sheet. Precisely how ugly becomes clear when he beckons you into his office to examine his daily briefing memo.
Payback Time

Illinois’s Cash Balance and Overdue Payments

He picks the papers off his desk and points to a figure in red: $5.01 billion.

“This is what the state owes right now to schools, rehabilitation centers, child care, the state university — and it’s getting worse every single day,” he says in his downtown office.

Mr. Hynes shakes his head. “This is not some esoteric budget issue; we are not paying bills for absolutely essential services,” he says. “That is obscene.”

For the last few years, California stood more or less unchallenged as a symbol of the fiscal collapse of states during the recession. Now Illinois has shouldered to the fore, as its dysfunctional political class refuses to pay the state’s bills and refuses to take the painful steps — cuts and tax increases — to close a deficit of at least $12 billion, equal to nearly half the state’s budget.

Then there is the spectacularly mismanaged pension system, which is at least 50 percent underfunded and, analysts warn, could push Illinois into insolvency if the economy fails to pick up.

States cannot go bankrupt, technically, but signs of fiscal crackup are easy to see. Legislators left the capital this month without deciding how to pay 26 percent of the state budget. The governor proposes to borrow $3.5 billion to cover a year’s worth of pension payments, a step that would cost about $1 billion in interest. And every major rating agency has downgraded the state; Illinois now pays millions of dollars more to insure its debt than any other state in the nation.

“Their pension is the most underfunded in the nation,” said Karen S. Krop, a senior director at Fitch Ratings. “They have not made significant cuts or raised revenues. There’s no state out there like this. They can’t grow their way out of this.”

As the recession has swept over states and cities, it has laid bare economic weakness and shoddy fiscal practices. Only an infusion of federal stimulus money allowed many states to avert deep layoffs last year.

Nanny State Update: New Government Policy Imposes Strict Standards on Garage Sales Nationwide

September 18th, 2009 by Exspider

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,552021,00.html

Give me a break! I can burn my leaves on the 1st and 3rd week of the month, only if the sun is still shinning? (new local mandate) And does Nancy Pelosi just have to bat her eyes to make it all happen in the first place?

Wake up America, the control freaks are out of control. People that think only their rules apply know nothing about human nature or physics in general.

Sure we should all try to do the right thing, but if we’re not careful, everybody will have rights but you. Once they take everything what do you have left?
That cannon could backfire if not loaded correctly.

Sick Humor and the plan of a life time……

H/T to Flopping Aces and Texas Fred for this one. A little humor is a good thing. Right?

Anyhow, here is what some of our folks in the medical field think of ObamaCare.

Medical Stimulus Package:

Apparently the American Medical Association has weighed in on the new economic stimulus package….

The Allergists voted to scratch it, but the Dermatologists advised not to make any rash moves.

The Gastroenterologists had sort of a gut feeling about it, but the Neurologists thought the Administration had a lot of nerve.

The Obstetricians felt they were all laboring under a misconception.

The Ophthalmologists considered the idea shortsighted.

Pathologists yelled, “Over my dead body!” while the Pediatricians said, ‘Oh, Grow up!’

The Psychiatrists thought the whole idea was madness, while the Radiologists could see right through it.

Surgeons decided to wash their hands of the whole thing.

The Internists thought it was a bitter pill to swallow, and the Plastic Surgeons said, “This puts a whole new face on the matter.”

The Podiatrists thought it was a step forward, but the Urologists were pissed off at the whole idea.

The Anesthesiologists thought the whole idea was a gas, and the Cardiologists didn’t have the heart to say no.

In the end, the Proctologists won out, leaving the entire decision up to the assholes in Washington.

Lose your property for growing food?

By Chelsea Schilling
© 2009 WorldNetDaily

Some small farms and organic food growers could be placed under direct supervision of the federal government under new legislation making its way through Congress.

Food Safety Modernization Act

House Resolution 875, or the Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009, was introduced by Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn., in February. DeLauro’s husband, Stanley Greenburg, works for Monsanto – the world’s leading producer of herbicides and genetically engineered seed.

DeLauro’s act has 39 co-sponsors and was referred to the House Agriculture Committee on Feb. 4. It calls for the creation of a Food Safety Administration
to allow the government to regulate food production at all levels – and even mandates property seizure, fines of up to $1 million per offense and criminal prosecution for producers, manufacturers and distributors who fail to comply with regulations.

Michael Olson, host of the Food Chain radio show and author of “Metro Farm,” told WND the government should focus on regulating food production in countries such as China and Mexico rather than burdening small and organic farmers in the U.S. with overreaching regulations.

“We need somebody to watch over us when we’re eating food that comes from thousands and thousands of miles away. We need some help there,” he said. “But when food comes from our neighbors or from farmers who we know, we don’t need all of those rules. If your neighbor sells you something that is bad and you get sick, you are going to get your hands on that farmer, and that will be the end of it. It regulates itself.”

An Optical Conclusion

March 13th, 2009 by Exspider

That’s the way my good friend Tom Beasley (artist-musician) always explained it anyhow. He was dead on with that analogy. What you see isn’t always what you get.

Once again Illusion meets with reality.
So why am I still scratching my head?

This is Alex Jones’ latest YouTube presentation. Crap. And I thought listening to NPR on the way to work was tedious. This is a totally different prospective on how the real world works folks . I’m sticking with “Illusion Or Reality” and “the dog ate my homework” for now.
You be the judge. This kind of stuff gives me a headache.

Not the brightest bulbs on the Hill.

December 22nd, 2007 by Exspider

The recently passed energy bill includes the phasing out of the incandescent bulb. It’s just another example of knee jerk reactions from the so-called environmental movement and global warming crowd. More often than not these attempts to “go green” backfire on everybody and do more harm than good. It’s nothing other than feel good, nanny state politics run amuck.

Not Again!!!!! This is another one of those issues that just won’t seem to go away. Bad ideas are the norm these days tho I guess. Hey, at least we still have Hillary to figure it all out for us ahead of time. We’re not lost, we’re just part of the “it takes a village” BS she has in store for us when she becomes Queen and CIC. A Navy LOST?
By Frank J. Gaffney Jr.
The Washington Times | Wednesday, October 10, 2007

Irony of ironies: The principal champion of the Law of the Sea Treaty (LOST) is the United States Navy. Yet predictably few organizations would suffer more than America’s naval forces from a supranational government of the oceans empowered by U.S. accession to that treaty.

Whiskers: Where did the lead solder go?

October 7th, 2007 by Exspider

Image

This is the mentality shared by most of the environmental protect us all crowd. They’ll ban incandescent bulbs in favor of energy consumption, but don’t realize the mercury in the fluorescent bulbs ends up in a land fill near them. This is the same bunch that keeps telling us we have do do everything possible to remove any trace of mercury from the stacks of our power plants.

Of course getting DDT outlawed made it possible for a lot of people to die from malaria but what the hell, they’re just trying to protect us, right? Heh, thanks but no thanks, I’ve got all the help I need…..

Whiskers

It was in May last year that we wrote, under the title The ultimate in fatuity, of a particularly damaging new EU law, Directive 2002/95/EC on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment.

This banned the use of lead in electronic equipment, thus prohibiting the use of lead-based solder, the stupidity of which we rehearsed in detail.

Now, it seems, chickens are coming home to roost, recounted in an AP report which tells of ruined missiles, silenced communications satellites and nuclear power plants to forced to shut down. Even pacemakers, consumer gadgets and a critical part of a space shuttle have fallen victim.

The culprits, says AP, are tiny splinters called whiskers, that sprout without warning from tin solder and finishes deep inside electronics. By some estimates, we are told, the resulting short-circuits have levelled as much as $10 billion in damage since they were first noticed in the 1940s.

Do you know Cory Mashburn and Ryan Cornelison?

If you do, don’t approach them. Call 911 and order up a SWAT team. They’re believed to be in the vicinity of McMinnville, Oregon, where they’re a clear and present danger to the community. Mashburn and Cornelison were recently charged with five counts of felony sexual abuse and the District Attorney, Bradley Berry, has pledged to have them registered for life as sex offenders.

Oh, by the way, the defendants are in the Seventh Grade.

This kind of stuff is becoming the norm in our country and it just doesn’t bode well for this old dog. Intelligence without a little common sense involved is just plain worthless and down right dangerous. The next thing you know we won’t even be allowed to spank our own kid’s butt’s. Oh wait.. Ya I know, you can’t spank them, but you can sure as hell be held accountable for what they do. Of course they have a right to an abortion without your consent or knowledge also. Does anybody else out there see a problem with this? Socialism is the dead end. Pun intended….

Funny Stuff: The Film Actors Guild

What Debate?

July 23rd, 2007 by Exspider

Very interesting stuff. Are these people serious?
Check out this video from the Democratic Debate 07/23/07.

Joe Biden is honest at least. He still believes he’s the only one smart enough to own a gun. Hmmmm???? What Bunk. Video Link HERE

Next thing you know Rod Blagojevich will outlaw smoking in bars here in Illinois. Oh Ya, he signed that one today. That’ll really help when it comes to tax revenues. Bad move Rod, socialism doesn’t pay very well in the long run. You proved that when you ran off the trucking outfits after jacking up the license fee’s.

Oh, the driveway heaters that you installed at the Governors Mansion (that you refuse to live in) was a nice touch though. Heck, $850,000 is chump change, right?

Anyhow. if I were you I’d put another 90 cent tax on cigarettes and bet on the casino’s (people) to bail you out. Sheesh…. Sometimes I really do miss Texas….

Proposed OSHA Regulation Threatens Firearm and Ammunition Industry

July 6th, 2007 by Exspider

I heard this earlier today via Rush Limbaugh and planned to bring the subject to bare in a post today. But as is the norm for me, I got side tracked on another project and didn’t get it done.  As it turns out William Page over at Old War Dogs jogged my memory with an email later on to the fact that I really needed to get this one posted. Thanks W!

This is a serious issue folks and it needs to be put before the people rather than dictated to us by another branch of government.

Call me anything you’d like, but don’t call me late for supper…….
Lines in the sand.......

Kiss your Second Amendment Rights Goodbye. WHY? No AMMO.
You’ve only got until July 18, 2007 to add your voice to the public comment to OSHA.
Needless to say, your gun is only a club without ammo.

Source: Link HERE

The proposed rule can be found >HERE
Lines in the sand.......

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the government agency charged with assuring the safety and health of America’s workers, is proposing a regulatory rule affecting the manufacturing, transportation and storage of small arms ammunition, primers and smokeless propellants.
As written, the proposed rule would force the closure of nearly all ammunition manufacturers and force the cost of small arms ammunition to skyrocket beyond what the market could bear—essentially collapsing our industry. This is not an exaggeration. The cost to comply with the proposed rule for the ammunition industry, including manufacturer, wholesale distributors and retailers, will be massive and easily exceed $100 million. For example, ammunition and smokeless propellant manufacturers would have to shut down and evacuate a factory when a thunderstorm approached and customers would not be allowed within 50 feet of any ammunition (displayed or otherwise stored) without first being searched for matches or lighters.
NSSF and SAAMI have already had a preliminary meeting with OSHA officials to begin the process of explaining to them the major problems this proposed rule presents for all levels of the firearms and ammunition industry. Furthermore, NSSF and SAAMI are each seeking a 60 day extension of the public comment period (currently scheduled to expire July 12).
NSSF is urging all retailers to contact OSHA directly and request a 60-day extension of the public comment period. Retailers should inform OSHA that the proposed rule constitutes a “significant regulatory action” as defined in Executive Order 12866 (1993) Section 3(f)(1) in that it will clearly “adversely affect in a material way” the retail sector of the firearms and ammunition industry, productivity, competition and jobs and that the annual compliance cost for all retailers of ammunition will far exceed $100 million dollars.

The Cell Phone Detector Network?

June 5th, 2007 by Exspider

For some reason this doesn’t surprise me.

_________________________________________________________

DHS Wants Cell Phones to Detect Chemical, Radioactive Material
By Rob Margetta, CQ Staff

American cell phones can already check e-mail, surf the Internet and store music, but they could have a new set of features in coming years: the Department of Homeland Security wants them to sense biological, chemical and radioactive material.

Putting hazardous material sensors in commercial cell phones has been discussed in scientific circles for years, according to researchers in the field. More recently, the idea gained support among government agencies, and DHS said publicly in May that it wants businesses to start coming up with proposals.

At the 2007 DHS Science and Technology Stakeholders Conference, S&T Director of Innovation Roger McGinnis outlined how the system could work. Cell phone sensors would continually test the air for harmful compounds and digitally relay any information to a central monitoring system if they find anything amiss.

“It’s a great way to get millions of detectors out there,” McGinnis said.

Like the built-in GPS function many cell phones now offer, customers would have the option of turning the sensors off, McGinnis said.

Deep-Six The Law Of The Sea

May 23rd, 2007 by Exspider

This is another fly in the global soup known as LOST, or the law of the sea treaty.

Hat tip to 1stCav at Old War Dogs for the link to EagleForum.org.

by Phyllis Schlafly, May 23, 2007

______________________

President George W. Bush is scheduled to announce any day that he will breathe new life into the old United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea which President Ronald Reagan rejected in 1982. Bush’s National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley has asked Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Joe Biden (D-DE) to secure Senate ratification “as early as possible.”

______________________

The 202-page Law of the Sea Treaty (LOST) entered into force in 1994 and has been ratified by 153 countries. The LOST created the International Seabed Authority (ISA), giving it total jurisdiction over all the oceans and everything in them, including the ocean floor with “all” its riches (”solid, liquid or gaseous mineral resources”), along with the power to regulate seven/tenths of the world’s surface.
